Description
The tower atop Mahan Hall can be spotted from most vantage points on the Naval Academy "Yard." Wreathed with elaborate Fin de Siècle cornices, arches and cast stone sculpture, it is one of the highest points on the campus.
Looking up at the four giant glass and metal clock faces, Midshipmen can tell if they are late for class. When the sole bell tolls, its booming tones echo throughout every corner of the Yard.
Mahan Hall, designed by famed Beaux Arts architect Ernest Flagg and constructed in 1907, served as a combination library and theater. In 1973, the Nimitz Library was built nearby and, since then, Mahan has served as a general classroom building and study area. The building's theater and auditorium, one of the most beautiful theaters in the region, is home to the USNA Masqueraders. Founded in 1847, just two years after the first classes were held, Masqueraders is one of the nation's oldest theater companies.
The building is named for Rear Admiral Alfred T. Mahan, who passed away seven years after its dedication. A plaque in the main hall notes he was the only known Midshipman to have never been a Plebe (he transferred to the Academy after a year at another college).
