The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), our national bird,is the only eagle unique to North America. The bald eagle's scientific name signifies a sea (halo) eagle (aeetos) with a white (leukos) head. At one time, the word "bald" meant "white," not hairless.
Both male and female adult bald eagles have a blackish-brown back and breast; a white head, neck, and tail; yellow feet, legs and beak; and pale yellow eyes.
The bald eagle is the only eagle confined to North America. There are no other large blackish-brown birds with a white head and tail in North American.
Status of the bald eagle - On June 28, 2007 the Department of Interior took the American bald eagle off the Federal List of Endangered and Threatened. Bald eagles will still be protected Under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
I'm a retired communications instructor/developer, raised on the Eastern Shore of Maryland (USA). I have a wide range of interests which include some artistic talent. My eclectic tastes, thirst for variety, and preference for images over words, eventually lead me through the internet to the world of 3D stereo in 2005. Since I've been with Fine Art America, I've focused primarily on regular photography with a touch of digital manipulation to better compose the images and ideas. Each time I think I've reached a peak, I find myself crossing another threshold that challenges my abilities and talents while paving way to another plateau. Thanks William, for the invitation to join the group. I probably haven't joined previously because I don't like many restrictions on how I process images and I'm fairly prolific, so I try to only join groups that allow more than one submission per day. Anyway, I have a few that could meet your group requirements and I'm glad you like my eagle shots. Thanks for the comment, L/F, and feature in the group, http://fineartamerica.com/groups/-wild-birds-of-the-world.html
