Description
The replica of the original Star Spangled Banner that flies at the Fort McHenry National Monument and Shrine in South Baltimore.
Somehow I manged to capture this photo with one hand as I held the corner of the flag with the other. As the folks folded the flag under direction of the park ranger, I was honored to be the ending point as it was folded toward me and I was the only person on this day to hold the flag alone as the park ranger received it from me.
This ritual is done each day as the replica of the original flag is taken down around 5pm and our present day 50 star flag replaces it until 10 am the next morning.
This flag represents the one that flew over Fort McHenry as the British attacked from the Patapsco river in South Baltimore during the War of 1812. This attack is known as "The Battle Of Baltimore".
Francis Scott Key observed the flag was still flying the next morning (By the dawn's early light) and was inspired to pen the words to what later became our country's national anthem.
